Hills to Die On: 3 Elements to Ponder in 10 Minutes

Did you hear about the church that split because they couldn’t agree on the new color of carpet?

We hear crazy stories like this and laugh.

Nervously.

Because we all know churches can obsess over what doesn’t matter. And forget what does.

So, what does matter? What is worth arguing over?

According to the Bible itself, not all beliefs based on the Bible are equally important. Because not everything is equally important, here are some important questions to ponder:

  • Are you and your church clear on what’s “of first importance”?
  • What if I say something is essential but other Christians disagree (are they no longer Christians)?
  • Is it okay to say something is essential (even if it’s technically not) because it helps safeguard the essentials?
  • Is something essential because it has to be true or because true Christians have to believe it? Or both?
  • And—very importantly—if something isn’t essential, does that therefore mean it’s not important to get right? Not important to argue over?
