John Whitaker reviews Preston Sprinkle’s book From Genesis to Junia, which argues for an egalitarian view of women in church leadership based on Sprinkle’s three-year study. Whitaker notes broad agreement with much of the book, including its survey of influential women in Scripture, its conclusion that “head” (kephalē) usually conveys authority, its handling of Ephesians 5, and its treatment of 1 Corinthians 11 and 14 as not banning all female speech. He then critiques Sprinkle’s overall framing and logic, argues Sprinkle overstates men’s failures in the Gospels, and finds his responses to Jesus choosing twelve male apostles unpersuasive.
