“The Jesus we preach, the gospel we uphold, and the faith we teach will determine the disciple we get.” Practical theology matters for everyday disciples like us. We all need help understanding that allegiance to Jesus as Savior, Lord, and King is the best framework to living as true disciples.
Too often people in our churches have been taught a transactional gospel, where we make a verbal transaction to just trust Jesus for when we die. Such a gospel misses the nature of real conversion and true faith. The King Jesus gospel teaches that, yes, conversion to Jesus is for salvation from sins, death, and the futility of this life when we die, but it is also a conversion to life in the kingdom, for full devotion to Jesus, here and now, on this earth too.
Bonhoeffer described the transactional gospel as cheap grace years ago. He wrote:
“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
This eBook The King Jesus Revolution addresses Bonhoeffer’s explicit concerns. Curt shows how, as church leaders, we can lead our churches on a better path.
