Would you like to help your church explore the most important sermon ever given? Sometimes we feel we know Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount fairly well if we can quote parts of it, such as the Beatitudes. But how well are our churches doing when it comes to actually following Jesus’ instructions in the Sermon on the Mount?
Let’s recall that Jesus did, in fact, expect us to take his instructions seriously, as he compared those who listened and obeyed to a wise person building their house on rock. Unfortunately, it is all too easy to feel warmly about the Sermon on the Mount without actually taking the time to follow it. As Jeremy Bacon, author of Sermon on the Mount: 40 Days of Learning the Ways of the Kingdom, put it,
“The Sermon on the Mount is dangerous. Maybe that’s why we embroider it and put it on our walls: ‘See, there it is, framed by pretty flowers and happy clouds.’ Nothing to worry about here. We fall into the trap of thinking that since we know it, we’ve actually listened to it.”
To help your church understand and obey Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, we have put together sermon outlines for 6 sermons (both PDF & Word doc) to go along with Bacon’s book. The book itself is equipped with discussion questions for use in small groups and discipling relationships.
