When someone far from God returns to the open arms of our Father, we observers do well to steer between the extremes of skepticism and naïveté. We are at our most helpful to our new brother in Christ when we acknowledge both the power of God and the weakness of humans. We can be realistic about the challenges our new brother will face without succumbing to skepticism. So with an attitude of both gratitude and gravity, I offer this prayer for Kanye:

Our Father in heaven, thank You for what You are doing in the life of Kanye West. I praise you for throwing parties in heaven at the repentance of sinners, myself included.

Praise You for putting songs of praise in Kanye’s heart. You have put new songs in his mouth, hymns of praise to You. Many are seeing and fearing You and putting their trust in You. As the world watches, I pray that Kanye would continue to use the gifts and influence You have given him to point people to You.

There will be days when Kanye’s past jabs a finger in his chest to accuse him. There will be times when his past struts up to seduce him. When we face temptations and condemnations, please remind us that our identity is Child of God, not what we used to be when we resided in the domain of darkness. We are Yours, and we need your mercy and your help every moment.

We deeply desire that You would make us good husbands and fathers. Thank You for teaching us what’s truly important by giving us precious children who grow our hearts larger each day. Please give us the strength and gentleness and intentionality to be dads that our kids will be thankful to have had.

We praise You that You have rescued us from us. We acknowledge with joy and relief that Jesus is King!

To Him who is able to keep us from stumbling and to present us before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
